Bhubaneswar called the city of the temple. On the other hand the city of the terrible battle of India. The Kaling war. The war fought between king Ashoka and Kaling king Raja Anantha. It is said that 1000000 soldiers and the public killed in the battle. The water in the Daya river turned red due to blood.

The victory goes in favor of king Ashoka. He asked himself what is the meaning of this victory? Why should I fight this battle? He wept like a child, turned a religious person after this massacre. Don't go in deep history. Let's come with me, we will see temples of Bhubaneswar.

The present Bhuvneshwar is the first planned city of India. German architect planned the city along with Chandigarh and Jamshedpur.

It is said that there are more than 700 temples in the city. If you want to see all the temples, it required at least three days.

Lingraj Temple

Lingraj temple is the most famous temple of Bhuvneshwar. It has a similar place to the Jagannath temple at Puri.

Who built Lingraj Temple

The temple built by Somvanshi king Yayati during the 11th century. The temple is 185 feet high and built-in Nagar shally(style).

The temple is dedicated to God Harihar. Harihar is formed by Hari And Har. Hari means Lord Vishnu and Har means Lord Shiva.

The temple complex has four main parts. Vimanam, Jagamohana, Nataya Mandir and Bhog Mandapam. There are 64 shrines dedicated to various deities of Hindu mythology. The auspicious Shivling is beautiful. It is said that this is a Syambhu Shivling(self emerged).

The Parvati temple dedicated to goddess Parvati having beautiful art carving on walls. It is really artistical.

Bindusagar pond near the temple is an auspicious pond. The water of the tank has a medical effect and cured many diseases. Pilgrims dip in the pond is a tradition.

Shivratri and Rath Yatra is the main function of the temple. Called chariot festival.

There is a drawback only Hindus are allowed in the temple. Non-Hindus visitors can see from a distance I.e. from view platform, which is the right side of the main entrance.

Temple opens for a pilgrim from 5 AM to 9 PM.

Rajarani Temple

The temple made in the 10th century. The temple is built from a special black brownstone called Rajarani. So the temple called Rajarani temple. The wall of the temple depicts erotic carving which remembers the Khajuraho temple. The temple built by Rajarani stone has a special position among all the temples.

There is no deity or idol inside the temple. Greenery is all around the temple. It is the place where you can spend some time comfortably. The temple is maintained by the archaeological of India. They charge entry fee Rs 15/- from Indians and Rs 200/- from a foreigner. The archaeological department arranges a music festival every year during the month of January. The program is really apotheosizing

Mukteshwar Temple

The red sandstone temple which dedicated to Lord Shiva. As shown in the name Mukteshwar means the God of freedom. The Toran(archway) of the temple is beautiful. Carving of ornaments, women their ornaments, animals, flowers is unique. There is a water tank behind the temple called Marichi Kund. The water of the Kund is famous for women's infertility.

The ceiling of the temple decorated with eight leaves lotus flower. Panchtantra story shown in the temple. The diamond shape latticed window on the north and south wall are beautiful.

Mukteshwar dance festival arranged every year during the month of Jan/Feb. So this is the best time to visit here.

Brahmeshwar Temple

The temple was built during, 11th century by Kolavati Devi's mother of the king. The temple is dedicated to Brahmeshwar, which is one kind of Lord Shiva.

The iron pillars first time used in building a temple.

There is four dance Mandapam. It is said that there were many Devdasi in the temple when Kolavati built this temple. Carving of dancing women, musicians, animals and couples in erotic posture may be seen on the walls of the temple.


Amid all temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, Ananta Vasudeva temple is Vaishnav temple dedicated to Lord Krishna Lord Balram and Goddess Subhadra. The temple was built during the 13th century by Chandrika Devi. The temple is made of three parts.

The temple is within walking distance from Lingraj temple and at the opposite of Bindu Sagar lacks. You can get Bhog (Parsad) from the counter inside the premise.

Parsurameshwara Temple

Parsurameshwara temple is the oldest temple of the Kaling period. The adorable temple of Lord Shiva. Beside Shivling, Goddess Mahalaxmi also established in the temple. You can see Sehstra(one thousand) small Shivling in the temple compound.

There is the idol of Parsuram, Surya(sun), Indra(king of Dev) and other gods as described in Hindu mythology.

Ram Mandir(Temple)

Ram Mandir is a newly constructed temple dedicated to Lord Rama, Lord Laxman and Goddess Sita. Proper management seen in the temple. Large spires may be seen from long distances.

All festival such as Ramnvmi, Krishna Janmashtami, Dashhera is celebrating in the temple.

ISKCON Temple

The beautiful ISKCON temple built by ISKCON society. The temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna, Lord Balram, and Goddess Subhadra.

Peace is scattered all around the campus. Bhog is distributed to all the pilgrims. Nam Sankirtan which is chanting in the evening is amazing.

Kedareshwar Temple

Near to the Mukteshwar temple, another famous temple is the Kedareshwar temple. Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are the main deities.

There is a story behind the temple, accordingly-Kedar and Gouri love each other. Villagers were against their marriage.

Kedar and Gouri fled away from the village. During the way, Kedar killed by a lion attracted. Gouri could not bear this shock. She jumped into the pond and sacrificed her life.

The king Lalatendu Keshri hearing this tragic story built a temple called Kedareshwar temple.

Even today lovers and newly married couples come here and pray Lord Shiva and Parvati for their smooth and happy married life.

Swarna Jaleshwar Temple

Swarna Jaleshwar Temple situated south outskirts of Bhubaneswar at village Kalarahanga. Lord Shiva is the deity here.

As per the story stated by locals that the temple built by Padam Keshri Somvanshi king of Chudangagada.

It is said that the king was a great follower of Lord Shiva and prayed daily at Lingraj temple. In his dream, Lord Shiva gave him ordered to prepare a temple in the lotus pond.

Accordingly, the king followed the order and built the temple.
